The idea of putting up a bakery that will produce good kuchen and other German delicacies was conceived by three ladies from Eureka, South Dakota, in 1998. Hulda Opp, Donna Mehlhaff and Maria Luz Alandy all live in Eureka, a small city made up of about 1200 people, mostly of German descent. This city is known for their good people and good food, especially KUCHEN.The three ladies named their enterprise "HDL, the good KUCHEN"(the letters come from the first initials of the founders' names). In the year 2000, kuchen was made the state dessert of South Dakota! After three years of baking and trying many recipes, the Eureka Kuchen Factory, LLC was finally established in May, 2001. Unfortunately, by this time one of the original founders had passed away.The Eureka Kuchen Factory opened its doors under the management of Maria and Hulda. New products have been added during the past years: PLACHENDAS, STRUDELS, CHEESE BUTTONS and now KRAUT STRUDELS, FLEISCHKUCHLA and KNEFLA!
The factory also makes buns, cookies, butterhorns, caramel and cinnamon rolls - by special order. The Eureka Kuchen Factory now employs 6 people to help in the baking.
